Black Alice

A NEW LOOK AND SOUNDING BLACK ALICE – SONS OF STEEL – Black Alice, spearheaded by original vocalist Rob Hartley and lead guitarist Jaime Page, has reformed with a dynamic new line-up to record the soundtrack for the Australian heavy metal film, “Sons of Steel.” The revamped ensemble features bassist Andy Cichon from ‘Rose Tattoo,’ drummer Scott Johnston from ‘Jimmy and the Boys,’ and keyboardist Paul Radcliffe from ‘Tanks.’ Together, they bring a fresh yet authentic sound to the project.

This album transcends a traditional soundtrack by incorporating additional tracks that are not featured in the film, offering a unique take on Black Alice’s signature heavy metal style. With 10 powerful tracks, this release not only complements the film but stands on its own as a bold statement of the band’s artistic evolution.

Endangered Species

Rediscover the Origins of Black Alice with the Re-Release of ‘Endangered Species’

In 1984, Kerrang! celebrated Perth’s heavy metal band Black Alice as the next sensational act out of Australia since AC/DC, heralding their debut album “Endangered Species.” Produced by Gary Keady and Steve James, and initially released by StreetTunes UK and later by Big Island Records in Australia, the album rapidly ascended to cult classic status. Following the band’s disbandment in 1985, Keady explored filmmaking, leading to the creation of “Knightmare,” a short film featuring Black Alice’s former lead vocalist, Rob Hartley.

This creative journey fuelled the production of the feature film “Sons of Steel,” written and directed by Keady. In 1987, Black Alice reunited with original members, including guitarist Jaime Page, drummer Scotty Johnston, and bassist Andy Cichon, to release an album also titled “Sons of Steel,” which further solidified their cult status.

In 2018, Puresteel Records revitalised ‘Endangered Species’ with bonus tracks, re-releasing it alongside the global launch of the “Sons of Steel” album. Concurrently, Umbrella Entertainment reissued the ‘Sons of Steel’ film on DVD and Blu-ray, featuring standout performances by Rob Hartley and Jeff Duff. This resurgence reaffirmed Black Alice’s enduring legacy in the heavy metal world, beginning as Gypsy and evolving into a seminal influence encapsulated by the character Hartley portrayed in ‘Sons of Steel.’
